How to reduce the risk of hand injuries
Hand injuries are among the most frequent injuries on vessels. Tingling in your hands and arms after working with power tools is an indication of our susceptibility to the effects of mechanical vibration and, in extreme cases, the onset of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
If your work involves frequent and heavy use of power tools, for instance grinders and ship deck derusting equipment, we recommend wearing anti-vibration gloves to help reduce the risk of injury. ScanKinetic is the latest addition to our range of work gloves and meets the EN ISO/ANSI standard for vibration reduction.
Since many of the gloves sold as anti-vibration protection are not certified, be sure to look for the relevant safety markings/labels and confirm your gloves have the relevant certifications. In addition, we recommend the following:
- Lower the vibration exposure action value (EAV) or exposure limit value (ELV)
- Decrease vibration exposure time by developing more efficient processes or by taking regular breaks
