Sustainability

Does Scandia have a sustainability strategy?

Yes, of course: click or tap the following link for our full sustainability statement: https://www.scandiagear.com/assets/Uploads/Sustainability-report-ontwerp-v5.pdf

When will our new Sustainability Statement be released?

At the beginning of each new year. Our newest version will be our statement about 2019/2020 and our goals for the future.

What is our new plastic policy?

Standard packaging is converted 1 by 1 by Product Development into more sustainable packaging. We used to pack all our products in separate polybags, so all items would have their own
packaging before they went into a box. We have changed this to use plastic as little as possible. Products are now packed and shipped without plastic to our customers. Recycled tissue paper is used for protection. From the supplier it will be shipped to us in 1 large master polybag (made of recycled plastic) to protect the products.

While some articles cannot be shipped without plastic packaging (e.g., eyewear), we are exploring alternatives. Eyewear, for example, must be wrapped with plastic to protect the coating of the glasses. We are now converting this to packaging made from recycled plastic, so that no new
plastic is used. Right now, ±81% of our product packaging has been converted to more sustainable packaging (i.e., plastic-free). This means that no more plastic is sent to the customer from our head office and Houston division. From Singapore, 1 large polybag is used to protect the products, because they have to deal with high humidity there unless there is no other option. Please note, this really only applies to our own products. Unfortunately, we have no influence on third-party products, which are still shipped in their regular packaging.

Download our New Plastic Policy here.

When will all products be converted to more sustainable packaging?

We have set goals which will also be reflected in the new statement.

These goals are:

  •  As of 2021, no more plastic packaging will be shipped from Scandia (except for exceptional items, like eyewear)

  •  From 2021, exceptional items will be shipped in 100% recycled plastic

  •  By 2021 all PO’s will be converted to the new plastic policy

  •  From Singapore, all orders are shipped in 1 master polybag made from recycled material

Do our 3rd party suppliers use sustainable packaging?

Unfortunately, we currently have little influence on the packaging of our third-party items. These are individual parties that have their own rules and packaging methods.

Why do we want to reduce our plastic consumption?

Since 2019, we have been actively working on the chosen United Nations Sustainability Development Goal (SDG): 14 Avoid Plastic to keep our oceans clean. We have a close connection to the sea, which is why we would like to contribute to this.

What are our sustainability goals at the moment?

Our goals are based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We focus on three goals that are very close to Scandia:

8: Decent work and economic growth. Our focus is on the working conditions in our factories. Through our amfori BSCI membership we are able to monitor and improve this.

12: Recycle paper, plastic: Responsible production and consumption. We hope to continue to expand this by means of our Green Label products.

14: Avoid Plastic Bags to keep the oceans clean. Our new plastic policy contributes to this.

Customers can find more information about the SDG’s HERE.

Do you monitor the working conditions of your production partners?

Scandia Gear works together with 45 production partners who have been selected with great care and attention. These production partners are spread all over the world, which sometimes makes it difficult to monitor social working conditions. At Scandia, we strive to monitor and improve our working conditions. To monitor this, we have become a member of amfori BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) since November 2019. Doing this entails that we replace our existing Code of Conduct with amfori BSCIs, itself shaped and adopted by its almost 2500-member companies in 46 countries. Before we enter into a partnership with a new production partner, the amfori BSCI process is carefully discussed, so that they too know that we are working with this platform and strive to improve working conditions at all times.

Find out more about this initiative here.

What is amfori BSCI?

Being a member of amfori BSCI is part of our sustainability policy. With almost 2500 members in 46 countries, it has managed to set up a large platform to work together on the working conditions in the factories. There are several Social Compliance initiatives, but we chose amfori BSCI for a reason. They do not only focus on the textile clothing industry, but are also active in other branches, which means that our footwear and PPE factories can also be audited. In addition, it can be expanded with amfori BEPI, which focuses on the environmental aspects in the factories. Something we would like to include more in our policy in the future.

amfori BSCI works with its own Code of Conduct which is based on 11 principles. This Code of Conduct has replaced Scandia Gear’s old Code of Conduct. The principles are based on, among others, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights and the ILO Conventions.

It is important to state that amfori BSCI is not a certificate, but a Continuous Improvement program. Together with our manufacturing partners, we continue to work on improvements in our supply chain.

By means of independent audits, our production partners are checked on 13 points of attention, which are based on the 11 principles of the Code of Conduct. These audits are carried out by an independent party. For example, we often work with SGS, Intertek, ALGI or Bureau Veritas. These agencies are trained by amfori and are authorized to conduct these audits. So, this is not done by amfori itself. In an audit you can get the rankings A to E, where A is the best and E is worst. In addition, a Zero Tolerance can be observed, which means that the audit is immediately stopped, for example child labor or bonded labor.

Currently, 46% of our production partners have had an amfori BSCI audit. This equates to 4,120 people working in safe conditions. Another 4% of our production partners have had a WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accreditation Production) certificate. This is another social compliance initiative that Scandia Gear also accepts, provided it has obtained gold or platinum certification. This 4% represents another 287 people who work in safe working conditions. Other social compliance initiatives that we accept include Sedex (SMETA) and SA8000. Every initiative has its own way of audititing and reporting, and we will determine on the basis of audit reports whether we can accept the audit results for the producer concerned. In addition, 26% still has to be audited in high-risk countries designated by amfori BSCI. We have made the following multiyear plan for this number:

The goals we have set for 2025 are as follows:

1. Garment production partners from countries designated high-risk that have not yet been audited for social compliance must undergo audits.

2. By 2025, all production partners must be physically visited at least once and / or all production partners must be visited every year by means of an online factory tour by our Social Compliance officer (taking into account COVID).

3. Before 2025, we have 80% insight into the Social Compliance status of our third party suppliers.

Our new Sustainability Report will be released at the beginning of 2021. More about this initiative will be explained here.
